Meta has unveiled its highly-anticipated mixed-reality headset, the Meta Quest Pro. Developed under the codename Project Cambria, the Quest Pro marks Meta’s first venture into the higher-end market of VR hardware. Rather than targeting gamers, Meta describes the headset as a tool to increase productivity among creatives, freelancers, and office workers.

What gives the Quest Pro a leg up on the more affordable Quest 2 is its advanced mixed reality capabilities. A more expansive lens design utilizes passthrough cameras to allow users to see the real world in their peripheral vision. This means users won’t have to take off the headset to complete daily tasks. When using the Quest Pro for work, the device streamlines multitasking by allowing for multiple screens to be open at the same time. Users can view screens side by side or switch between them. For those seeking a more traditional VR experience, users can attach light blockers to the sides of the headset for greater immersion.
For the hardware, a Snapdragon XR2+ processor gives the Quest Pro 50% more processing power than its predecessor. The device also boasts more pixels per inch, a 75% greater contrast, and twice the memory of the Quest with 12GB. For the design, the back mount holds the battery for a more level, balanced feel. The new pancake lens design is 40% thinner than Quest 2. However, the hardware as a whole is heavier at 1.6 lb compared to the Quest’s 1.1 lb.
Additionally, Meta swaps out its old controllers in favor of new self-tracking controllers with haptic feedback. Unlike the previous Rift and Quest controllers, the new Quest Pro controllers don’t require tracking rings or headset cameras to operate, thereby granting users full 360-control. The new controllers are also compatible with earlier Quest models and can be purchased for $299 USD.
Meta’s Quest Pro VR headset will begin shipping on October 25. Lastly, for more of the latest in tech, Google Joins the Smartwatch Fold with its First-Ever Pixel Watch.
