Apple revealed a plethora of updates to its product lineup during its Peek Performance Event on Tuesday. While we didn’t get any concrete updates on a new lineup of iPhones or MacBooks, the cutting-edge company did offer plenty to be excited about. A powerful new M1 Ultra chip, updated iPad Air, and revelatory Studio computer for creatives were just some of the products unveiled. Without further ado, let’s dive into everything Apple showed off at its Peek Performance Event.

Foremost, Apple revealed two new devices – the Mac Studio and Studio Display. The compact Mac Studio serves as a companion to existing displays. It is powered by either the M1 Max or the new M1 Ultra chips. The device has an array of ports that allow for easy connectivity to external storage or displays. On the back is four Thunderbolt 4 ports to connect displays and devices, as well as a 10 Gb Ethernet port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and a pro audio jack for headphones or speakers. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are also built-in to the device. On the front, Mac Studio offers an SD card slot and two USB-C ports. The device provides display support for up to four Pro Display XDRs and a 4K TV. With the M1 Ultra chip, the device can playback at 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video with 128GB of unified memory. Apple claims no other computer in the world can accomplish this feat. Additionally, the Mac Studio offers a 27-inch 5K Retina display, 12MP Ultra Wide camera with Center Stage, studio-quality three-mic array, and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio.
The Studio Display, meanwhile, flexes an all-screen design with narrow borders and an aluminum enclosure. The built-in adjustable stand offers a 30% tilt and a VESA mount adapter supporting landscape or portrait orientation. Additionally, the display has three USB-C ports and a Thunderbolt port for peripheral connectivity. A 96-watt power cable allows for the Studio Display to fast-charge a 14-inch MacBook Pro. In total, up to three Studio Displays can be connected to MacBook Pro for workspace options across Apple devices. The new Mac Studio starts at $1,999 USD. The Studio Display is $1,599 USD. Both are available for pre-order online and will begin arriving on March 18th.

Now, more on those new M1 Ultra chips. The next-generation Apple Silicon chip is the latest entry in Apple’s M1 lineup. The updated chip includes a total of 20 cores, 16 of which are high performance. The custom-built architecture design combines the power of two individual M1 Max chips into a single system on a chip. Further, the M1 Ultra supplies 2.5 terabytes per second – four times the bandwidth of competing chips. The chip also features 64 GPU cores and up to 128GB of RAM and is equipped with 114 billion transistors. This means the chip is capable of supporting 800 GB/s of bandwidth. In terms of power consumption, Apple says the new chip offers higher CPU performance while operating on 100W less power. GPU performance is similar to the “highest-end discrete GPU” while utilizing 200W less power.

Next, the iPad Air gets a major boost with the M1 chip. The M1 is the same chip used in the iPad Pro, offering better power efficiency and all-day battery life. With an 8-core CPU, the chip provides up to 60% faster performance. The 8-core GPU delivers up to 2x faster graphics performance compared to previous iPad Air models. The M1 chip also includes a 16-core Neural Engine to power advanced machine learning functions, thus speeding up complex computing tasks. Further, the new iPad Air has a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage. The 12MP Wide back camera captures 4K video, with additional editing and sharing functions built into the device. Additional specs include a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, landscape stereo speakers, an updated USD-C port, and 5G connectivity with speeds up to 3.5 gigs per second. The new iPad Air comes in 64GB and 256GB configurations and is available in space gray, pink, purple, blue, and starlight finishes. It is available for pre-order beginning this Friday, March 11th, and will ship the following week. Prices start at $549 USD.

Additionally, Apple also revamps the iPhone SE with the A15 Bionic chip in three new colorways. This includes Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED. The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro also get cosmetic updates with Green and Alpine Green colorways. Lastly, Apple teased an update to its Mac Pro “for another day,” as well as a rumored punch-hole design for the iPhone 14 Pro.
