Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name into the record books once more with his 806th goal. In true Ronaldo fashion, the record-breaking score was part of a hat trick in his home Old Trafford Stadium against Tottenham.

Ronaldo netted a superb strike from distance in the 12th-minute of the match to tie the record previously held by Josef Bican. Though FIFA does not keep an official record, the governing body estimates Bican scored 805 goals during his career from 1931 to 1955. Ronaldo surpassed the record with a tap-in off a neat pass from Jadon Sancho. He later added a third goal to win the match, sparking wild celebrations in the stands. Over the course of his career, Ronaldo has scored goals for Sporting, United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and the Portugal national team. He also holds records for most international goals with 115, and most Champions League goals with 140.
Interestingly enough, there is still some minor debate as to whether Ronaldo’s record is legitimate. The Czech Football Association claims that statistics indicate Bican’s total is actually 821 goals. Additionally, Brazilian strikers Romario and Pele each scored over a thousand goals in their illustrious careers. However, their statistics include strikes in amateur, unofficial, and friendly matches. Regardless, according to FIFA’s recognition, Ronaldo now stands alone atop the list of the greatest scorers in history.
