It’s getting to be that time in LeBron James‘ illustrious career where all-time records start falling. Last month, he surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most points scored in the regular season and playoffs. Now King James adds yet another stat to his esteemed legacy.

In Sunday’s game against the Phoenix Suns, Carmelo Anthony swished a three-pointer off a pass from LeBron, giving King James his 10,000th career assist. The feat made LeBron the first player in NBA history to tally 10,000 points, rebounds, and assists. No other player has reached 9,000 rebounds and 9,000 assists, regardless of point total. After the game, James addressed what the truly historic accomplishment means to him.
“To now sit alone at a statistical category in this league that I’ve really modeled my game after – being able to score, rebound and assist. [To] sit alone at a stat is pretty like — I’d say ‘cool,’ but it doesn’t quite make sense to me. It’s an honor.”
Unfortunately, LeBron’s achievement came in yet another loss for the lowly Lakers. Despite the abysmal performance from Los Angeles this season, LeBron continues his reign as the best player in the NBA. Now in his 19th NBA season, James is still playing at a highly competitive level. He currently leads the league in scoring – something he hasn’t done since he was 23. Just last week, LeBron became the first player over 35 to have multiple 50-point performances. With each passing game, it seems as though the gap is closing between LeBron James and GOAT status.
Currently, James ranks third on the all-time scoring list with 36,854 points, behind Kareem and Karl Malone. James will pass Malone before the season’s end, and it’s only a matter of time before he surpasses Kareem. That’s pretty good for a guy who wasn’t thought to be much of a scorer when he entered the league. Though he likely won’t be adding a fifth championship this season, King James continues to cement his legacy in other ways.
