The notorious failure of the original live action Super Mario Bros film in 1993 made many believe the franchise would avoid Hollywood forever. However the massive success of the 2023 animated feature proved that the iconic plumber translates beautifully into the medium of animation. Despite some mixed reviews from critics the movie shattered box office records and became a massive hit with fans everywhere. This triumph serves as another prime example of the golden age of video game adaptations that we are currently experiencing.
Nintendo Unveils The Next Generation With Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves
Now the creative teams at Illumination and Nintendo are aiming to keep that incredible momentum going with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Based directly on the critically acclaimed Nintendo Wii games the upcoming animated sequel promises to significantly expand the scope of the cinematic universe. Recent trailers revealed an absolutely stacked voice cast stepping into beloved roles. Benny Safdie is set to voice Bowser Jr while Donald Glover takes on Yoshi and Brie Larson steps into the role of Princess Rosalina. However the studio just confirmed another major character is joining the cosmic adventure and he hails from an entirely different space faring property.
Earlier today Nintendo officially released a new poster for the film confirming that Fox McCloud will make an appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The legendary pilot is the main protagonist of the Star Fox franchise which originally launched back in 1993 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The classic series follows Fox and his elite team of mercenary pilots as they battle the evil scientist Andross across the Lylat system. The Nintendo 64 entry remains one of the most celebrated and iconic titles in the massive history of the company.
This inclusion is incredibly surprising given the strict rules Nintendo traditionally follows. During an interview last year legendary creator Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned an unspoken company policy to keep distinct franchises completely separated with the Super Smash Bros fighting series serving as the only major exception. This new movie appears to break that rule entirely as Pikmin characters are also confirmed to appear right alongside the Arwing pilot. With an animated adaptation of The Legend of Zelda also currently in development it is not impossible to imagine that Nintendo is quietly building toward a massive cinematic crossover event.
Considering the massive popularity of the character his appearance in this cosmic Mario adventure could easily lead to a dedicated standalone film. A family friendly animated space epic starring the Star Fox crew feels like an absolute guaranteed win for the studio. There is currently no official word on whether fans will see other beloved crew members like Falco Lombardi Slippy Toad or General Pepper in this specific movie. For now audiences can only speculate and prepare for what is shaping up to be a truly massive theatrical adventure. You can watch the final trailer by clicking the play button.
