The next adventure for Mario is officially heading to the stars. During a special Nintendo Direct presentation on Friday, Universal and Illumination announced that the highly anticipated sequel to the record-breaking The Super Mario Bros. Movie is titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The animated film is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026.
The announcement was strategically timed to land just one day before the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. video game, which was released on September 13, 1985, making it a special celebration for fans. The Nintendo Direct kicked off with a teaser for the sequel, which showed Mario sleeping peacefully under a tree near Princess Peach’s castle before the camera panned up to the vastness of space, hinting at the cosmic adventure to come.
‘Superman’ Sequel Titled ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Set for July 2027 Release
The film’s title is a direct reference to Nintendo’s beloved 2007 hit video game for the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy. This strongly suggests that the sequel will expand beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and take the heroes on an intergalactic journey, potentially introducing new characters and gravity-defying worlds, much like its video game counterpart.
The sequel will look to build on the monumental success of the first film. Released in April 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a box office juggernaut, earning a staggering $1.36 billion worldwide and becoming the most successful video game adaptation of all time. It currently stands as one of the highest grossing animated films in history. The entire all-star voice cast is set to return for the sequel, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser.
The confirmation of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the next major step in Nintendo’s growing cinematic ambitions. The company is also partnering with Sony Pictures to release a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, directed by Wes Ball, in 2027.
