British actor Henry Cavill has officially announced that he will no longer play the role of Superman. DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn confirmed the news that Cavill will not be joining their new universe shortly after reassuring fans that “Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”

Cavill shared an emotional statement on Instagram regarding his departure from the iconic role he held since 2013’s Man of Steel. Though he was initially told by the studio to announce his return back in October, recent conversations with DC execs indicated an immense change. The news is the latest in a plethora of major shakeups since Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios. Gunn has often taken to Twitter to debunk certain rumors, including one that suggests Robert Pattinson’s Batman will play a role in their wider DC Universe.
“Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about,” said Gunn. “We’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.”
Gunn also confirms that he’s writing the next Superman movie, which will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life. The script will focus on the character’s days as a young reporter in Metropolis. Audiences will encounter him first meeting key characters, including colleague Lois Lane. Additionally, sources say this new project will not replace the previously announced J.J. Abrams – Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman concept, which is still in active development.
