The latest project from MSCHF could turn New York City into a slightly more civil version of Grand Theft Auto. The enigmatic Brooklyn-based art collective – makers of the infamous Lil Nas X “Satan Shoes” – revealed their newest gimmick titled Key4All. Simply put, MSCHF is selling thousands of car key fobs for $19 each. The catch? They all unlock the same car.
The Maldives Shares Plan to Build the World’s First Floating City
To take it a step further, MSCHF leaves no information regarding the make and model of the car. It can be anywhere in NYC, and anybody with a key fob can unlock the vehicle and drive it. Keyholders can find the car in one of two ways. The first is to call MSCHF’s Hotline which provides real-time location coordinates, as well as the speed of the vehicle if it’s currently being driven. The second is to simply walk around as the key fob will change color to green if you’re near the car.
The Key4All project is MSCHF’s attempt at reverting socioeconomic assumptions. “The so-called sharing economy is a fiction… the central fulcrum on which sharing rests is in fact that it is not an economy.” Key4All exists somewhere between the joy of communal ownership and the dirty competitiveness of capitalism. The resulting concept is an ungovernable, anarchic Zipcar – it’s both a game and a social experiment.
“The car is transient and un-ownable, a journey and temporary blessing. It is a contest without the security of victory. If you find the car, it is yours. But if you want to enjoy the fruits of your victory and drive, then you must accept the risk of taking the car out in the world–that another driver-errant may snatch the vehicle out from under you.”
So how long will the Key4All project go on? According to MSCHF, “Forever! Or until the car is destroyed or impounded.”
If you’re interested in playing the game, you can purchase a key over on MSCHF’s official campaign website. Lastly, in case you missed it, Mercedes-Benz’s Electric G-Class SUV Will Arrive in 2024.
