As climate change continues to disrupt our planet, one nation looks to combat the stark reality of rising sea levels. The low-lying island nation known as the Maldives has long been a picture-perfect paradise getaway. Now, a futuristic floating city will rise from the Indian Ocean as a sustainable living alternative. The impressive project for the Maldives’ Floating City has officially received the green light to begin construction.

Located in a turquoise lagoon just 15 minutes by boat from the Maldivian capital of Male will be a floating city big enough to house 20,000 people. The city will feature 5,000 housing units linked together in a design similar to brain coral. Additionally, the project is based on an integrated tourism model, meaning the city will also include hotels, shops, and restaurants. International travelers will have the option of obtaining a residence permit with the purchase of a house. Further, the city will be completely car-free, opting instead for navigation via the canals and white-sand roads. Visitors and residents can walk, bike, or ride electric, noise-free buggies and scooters as they traverse the town.
Presently, the forward-thinking initiative is a joint venture between property developer Dutch Docklands and the Government of the Maldives. Rather than some sort of zany experiment, the two sides view this project as a practical solution to the harsh reality of climate change. As an archipelago of 1,190 low-lying islands, the Maldives is one of the world’s most vulnerable nations to climate change. Eighty percent of its land area lies less than one meter above sea level, meaning the entire country could be submerged by the end of the century.
