We’re fastly approaching two years since next-gen consoles were first announced, and they’re still next-to-impossible to get your hands on. Chip shortages and supply chain issues have made it impossible to maintain a steady supply of the highly sought-after consoles. To deal with the shortages of the Xbox Series X and Series S, as well as the Playstation 5, Microsoft and Sony opted for very different strategies.
For Microsoft, they’ve fully discontinued production for the Xbox One. Previously, Microsoft discontinued just the digital edition consoles, though now they’ve ceased production of the entire line of Xbox Ones. This will give the company full capacity to create next-gen consoles. Microsoft assures us that they’ll be able to meet the demand for the Xbox Series S very soon.

Sony, on the other hand, decided that the best way to deal with PS5 shortages is to produce more PS4s. Sony had originally planned to cease production of new PS4 consoles by the end of 2021. Due to the aforementioned shortages, Sony is now planning to craft an additional million PS4 units this year. The PS4 console requires less advanced chips and is much cheaper to manufacture. But is this really what gamers want? How many people are likely to cope with PS5-induced FOMO by simply buying a PS4 instead? Sony did announce, however, that upcoming exclusive titles will be available on both PS4 and PS5 this year. This includes God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon: Forbidden West.
