[junkie-dropcap]L[/junkie-dropcap]istening to Dom is like being on vacation. You can kick back and relax and enjoy the time. It’s part of what makes Kennedy so relatable. There’s always a lesson and a nugget of truth about life. Separating himself from the industry politics and choosing to make his own imprint worked well for him. We’re now at a place where the industry notices Kennedy as not just a rapper but and profitable company. Releasing all his own projects under his own label, The Other Peoples Money Company. His latest effort Rap N Roll is no different.
LOU Tells a West Coast Story in Superb New EP “Gettin’ Away”
The project finds DOM KENNEDY in his element. He seldom strays from his from his winning recipe and although I could be critical about this. For Dom, it works so well, changing it would likely be to his detriment. His relaxed, laid back flow backed by conclusively with Westcoast influenced production captures vividly whatever emotions DOM KENNEDY relays. Then you throw in Hit-Boy and JohnG on the production, and then things get spooky. They know how to bring out the best in Kennedy. Challenging him with production that still is very west coast but feature elements influenced by the cold north and smooth samples that take you back. Pulling together multiple elements and talents that still don’t scratch the surface.
Standout records like August 22nd give you that lowered, down tempo vibe. The sampled melody is fantastic and memorable, almost anthemic. West coast ladies are going to have a heyday with that track. For good reason, its west coast gentleman talk and captures the listener instantly. The smoothest record on this project has to be “Love Is Gangster” produced by my brother JohnG Beats./ I think it’s one of the better songs on the project, smooth from start to finish, and that sample gives way to honest reflection regarding love and appreciating those special moments.
DOM KENNEDY and Hit-Boy Release “Also Known As”
Records like “4 The Lil Homies” feature production that’s almost tactile. As soon as it begins its accension, its consistency becomes apparent. There are moments where I feel Dom could’ve showcased his versatility. He’s transcending underground appeal and has garnered the admiration by some of raps’ biggest stars. Take Big Sean‘s latest album. DOM KENNEDY gives you the feels on “Still I Rise” and although he was just used on the hook. The song wouldn’t be the same without him.
Rap N Roll isn’t groundbreaking by any means but what it does, it does well and for longtime DOM KENNEDY fans, they’ll just be glad Kennedy has a new album out. This album sits between wanting more and hoping for it. I’m satisfied, but still I’m hoping that when the world is ready for DOM KENNEDY, it all clicks. Whenever that is, know this. DOM KENNEDY will forever be one of the most beloved rappers on the West Coast, they’re always ready for him. And for the OPM general, apparently, that’s good enough.
