Getting your hands on current generation gaming hardware is about to become a lot more expensive. Sony just confirmed a major global price increase across the entire PlayStation 5 family and the Portal remote player. Taking effect on April 2 this marks the second time in less than twelve months that the tech giant has raised the cost of its consoles.

Shoppers in the United States are looking at some steep new price tags. The standard PlayStation 5 equipped with a disc drive will now retail for $649.99 USD. The Digital Edition is also jumping up by $100 USD to reach $599.99 USD. The premium Pro model is taking the biggest hit of all with a massive $150 USD spike bringing the cost to a whopping $899.99 USD. Even the handheld Portal streaming device is bumping up by $50 USD to settle at $249.99 USD. These pricing adjustments are also hitting international markets including Europe and Japan.

The company published an official blog post attributing the drastic changes to continued pressures in the global economic landscape. Sony claimed the pricing shifts are an absolute necessity to maintain high quality gaming experiences for their community. Industry experts note that the real culprit is a severe shortage of RAM and memory chips. The booming artificial intelligence sector is completely devouring component supplies. As massive AI data centers demand more hardware manufacturers are forced to pass those skyrocketing production costs directly down to everyday consumers.
