Argentina and France Set to Face Off in World Cup Final

Messi vs. Mbappé: Club teammates turned international rivals.

After a shocking loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening game, Argentina looks poised to raise the trophy for the first time since 1986. Messi has been the star of the tournament scoring five and assisting on three of Argentina’s 12 goals. With this being his last World Cup, Messi has been playing his heart out as he looks to secure the one title his distinguished resume lacks.

“We did not think we would lose to Saudi Arabia. It was an acid test for this whole squad but this squad proved how strong we are,” said Messi. “It was very difficult what we did because every match was a final and we were aware if we did not win things would be complicated for us.”

Argentina has won five straight since that opening loss. They defeated Poland and Mexico in pool play, then Australia, Netherlands, and 2018 runner-ups Croatia in the knockout round. Spain’s 2010 team is the only squad to ever lose their opening game at the World Cup and go on to win the tournament.

For France, a goal in the fifth minute set the tone early in their semifinal matchup against tournament darlings Morocco. Les Bleus has overcome numerous pre-tournament injuries – including to Ballon d’Or striker Karim Benzema – to return to the Final. 23-year-old superstar Kylian Mbappé has also scored five times in the tournament and will surely rival Messi for the Golden Boot.

Only 21 players in history have won the men’s World Cup more than once. Mbappé is on the verge of winning the first two he’s participated in. Previously, France eliminated Argentina 4-3 in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Given the circumstances, the 2022 World Cup Final certainly feels like a matchup of destiny.
