After 35 years in storage, original works from Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Salvador Dalí created for the avant-garde carnival Luna Luna will see the light of day. Drake breathes new life into a project once thought to be extinct thanks to a hefty $100 million donation from his own fortune.
Luna Luna was an open-air museum and amusement park in Hamburg, Germany in the summer of 1987. Austrian artist André Heller collaborated with 32 artists to create colorful original sculptures and installations for the project. For example, Basquiat designed a Ferris wheel composed of his drawings and Haring created a carousel decorated with his iconic cartoonish characters and symbols. Additionally, British artist David Hockney created an enchanted forest installation on a temporary pavilion construction.

The park originally set to tour around Europe after its successful summer in Hamburg. However, issues over ownership and associated lawsuits nixed the tour entirely. Heller eventually sold Luna Luna for $6 million in 1990. Constant legal issues forced the installations to spend 15 years locked in a park in Texas.
“When I first heard about Luna Luna, I was blown away,” Drake said in a statement. “It’s such a unique and special way to experience art. This is a big idea and opportunity that centers around what we love most: bringing people together.”
Drake and creative director Michael Goldberg plan to restore the artworks, establish a curation team, and prepare for a global tour. A documentary of the restoration process is also currently in the works. Luna Luna will open in Los Angeles in late 2023 before a North American tour, then a world tour.
