Over the weekend, a concept video detailing a nuclear-powered sky hotel circled the interweb. Known as the “Sky Cruise,” the futuristic aircraft is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Originally designed by Tony Holmsten and reimagined by Hashem Al-Ghaili, the conceptual model boasts some insane specs.

CGI imaging provides us with an inside look inside the gargantuan Sky Cruise designed to accommodate 5,000 people. To maximize luxurious comfort in the sky, the aircraft features a hotel with restaurants and bars, a shopping mall, gyms, medical centers, movie theaters, swimming pools, external elevators, event spaces, and a 360-degree observation deck.
To power this massive flying machine, small nuclear reactors use highly-controlled fusion reactions to fuel twenty electric engines. This enables the plane to fly for several years without ever needing to touch the ground. Guests, as well as various supplies, are delivered to the Sky Cruise via an electric commercial aircraft. Additionally, the video indicates that all maintenance tasks can be performed above ground as well. Further, the AI piloting the navigation desk features state-of-the-art anti-turbulence technology.
However, don’t anticipate being able to book your tickets anytime soon. The main technology to power an aircraft of this magnitude does not exist yet. Although advancements in nuclear fusion research are promising, we are “always 30 years away” from actually controlling fusion power. Regardless, the Sky Cruise is yet another reason to be excited about what the future of science and tech could look like.
