It’s almost here, we have about a month before the release. Nothing finally offered a detailed look at its highly-anticipated phone (1) to a private audience at Art Basel. Consistent with its prior offerings, the Nothing phone (1) features a transparent casing with a unique mechanical design composed of over 400 components. Its robust and lightweight exterior frame is made of 100% recycled aluminum and 50% of the phone’s plastic parts consist of bio-based or post-consumer recycled materials.
The industrial design portion of the device led by Dyson designer Adam Bates with inspiration taken from artists like Massimo Vignelli who designed New York’s subway map turning the complex system into a work of art. Side button layouts, flattened edges, and dual rear-facing cameras seemingly pull inspiration from the iPhone 12, and a closer look at the contents of the clear case back reveals a large integrated charging coil, white light strips, and “Nothing” branding along the bottom.
“For years now, it felt like all the artists had left the industry. All we’re left with are cold, unexciting and derivative products. It was time for a fresh take.” said Pei. “phone (1) was designed out of instinct, making a product for ourselves and more importantly that we would be proud to share with our loved ones. Can’t wait for people to start experiencing it.”
As for functionality, the technology company’s co-founder and CEO Carl Pei hinted that the phone will be heavily software-focused and will run a custom version of Android backed by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. You can take a look at early builds of the software in the gallery above.
