In one of the more outlandish events in recent sports memory, Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown stripped mid-game and seemingly quit the NFL. The sequence occurred with under three minutes left in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.
Prior to his exit, Buccaneer teammates Mike Evans and O.J. Howard were seen trying to calm Brown down on the sidelines. Brown then removed his helmet, jersey, pads, and undershirt before dashing across the endzone shirtless in the middle of a Buccaneers offensive drive. Brown proudly waved to fans in the crowd as he exited to the locker room. It is expected that Brown will face some form of disciplinary action by the NFL.
After the game, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians confirmed that Brown is no longer with the team, saying “I’m not talking about him, he’s no longer part of the Bucs.” The Buccaneers went on to win the game 28-24.
The New Age Legacy Roster
Antonio Brown is no stranger to this sort of drama and controversy. The prodigal wide receiver was traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019 after skipping practice and arguing with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The Oakland Raiders then made Brown the highest-paid receiver in the league before a series of controversial events lead to his release. That same day in September 2019, Brown signed with the New England Patriots. Less than three weeks later, several sexual and personal misconduct allegations lead, once again, to him being cut. Brown has also retired and un-retired multiple times. This latest outburst seems to be the nail in the coffin for his NFL career.
At this time, it is unclear exactly why Brown left Sunday’s game. We’ll keep you updated as this story develops.
