Drake Withdraws His 2022 Grammy Nominations

The 'Way 2 Sexy' rapper opts to remove his two nominations from consideration.

It appears that Drake won’t be partaking in the upcoming 64th Grammy Awards.  In a report from Variety, Drake and his management team requested they be removed from consideration in this year’s show.  On Monday afternoon, a rep from the Recording Academy confirmed that Drake withdrew his two Grammy nominations.  At the time of the article’s publication, Drake’s motivation for the decision was undisclosed.

When Grammy nominations were announced in November, Drake received two nods.  His latest project Certified Lover Boy was nominated for Best Rap Album, while lead single “Way 2 Sexy” was nominated for Best Rap Performance.  Rather than replace Drake’s two spots, the voting in those categories will proceed with just four nominees.  The rapper missed out in the Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year categories.  The official Grammy website will be updated shortly to reflect these changes.

Drake has had a testy relationship with the Grammys over the course of his career.  After winning the award for Best Rap Song in 2019 for his mega-hit “God’s Plan,” Drake had some choice words for fellow artists.  “All my peers that make music from their heart that do things pure and tell the truth, I wanna let you know we’re playing in an opinion-based sport,” he said.

Last year, he shaded the Academy after The Weeknd wasn’t nominated for any major award.  The Weeknd’s After Hours was one of the biggest albums of 2020.  Meanwhile, lead single “Blinding Lights” is one of the most successful songs of all time.  Drake proposed the Grammys be replaced with “something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come.”  The Grammys have an ugly history of insider deals and self-interested voting processes.
