The global chip shortage has affected all players within the space. Even giants such as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. The Nintendo Switch OLED is a widely popular device and will definitely be in high demand over the holiday season. Unfortunately Nintendo won’t be able to meet the demand.

Nikkei Asia recently reported that the Japanese gaming console company will make approximately 20% fewer Nintendo Switch consoles by the end of the fiscal year. This would mean there will be about 24 million fewer units available for sale, making it much more difficult to purchase a Switch over the holiday season.

Microsoft Reveals They’ve Never Made Profit Off Xbox Console Sales

Although this is a damper regarding Nintendo’s production, the company has had quite a successful 2021 year with the release of the Switch version of Wii U’s Super Mario 3D World which they paired with Bowser’s Fury. Together, the package sold nearly 6 million copies worldwide.

Nintendo also saw sale major sales increases with the release of the OLED Model of the Switch last month, which featured a more improved screen. With the reduction of chips around the world, other gaming consoles including Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X will also face production demand issues. The Switch has sold almost 90 million units since 2017 and it shows no signs of slowing down. We’re unsure what Nintendo will do to battle the global chip shortage, but we’ll keep you posted as more on this story develops.
