It didn’t take long for Warner Bros. to give the official green light for Dune: Part 2, as they’ve proclaimed the release date.

A day prior to the film’s premiere, Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff alluded to a follow-up film. Six days later, an official notice from Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. confirmed that the sequel will indeed happen. Finally, Director Denis Villeneuve himself, announced in a statement:

“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two. It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”

It was always within Villeneuve’s plans for the film to be a two-part movie. It was also revealed that Villeneuve only signed on to direct Dune for Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment as they agreed he could split Frank Herbert’s novel into two parts. Villeneuve initially wanted to film both movies back-to-back, but that wasn’t a risk the studio opted to take. With the official announcement of Dune: Part 2, Warner Bros. also announced that the sequel will receive its own exclusive theatrical release on October 20, 2023.
