Elon Musk just announced he’ll be giving $100 million USD to anyone who can provide the best carbon capture technology. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO recently garnered the title of world’s richest person, so we’re sure he’s got a bit of extra money to invest.
Musk took to Twitter, “[I’m] donating $100M towards a prize for best carbon capture technology.” Details of Musk’s new competition haven’t been revealed yet but should come “next week.” Carbon capture involves the combination of several technologies with a focus on capturing carbon dioxide and preventing it from escaping into the atmosphere. A philanthropic effort is in line with Musk’s ideals regarding technological solutions to environmental problems. It also taps into his engineering background.
It seems Musk plans to use his funds to further improve humanity and moving humanity to an interplanetary species: “It’s going to take a lot of resources to build a city on Mars. I want to be able to contribute as much as possible,” said Musk in an interview last year. This competition will mark Musk’s single largest donation to date.
