It’s been a while, but they’re finally getting back to it. On Tuesday, Twitter announced their verification program would return early next year. A process that was question in the past and halted for almost three years. Today, the social media company announced the program would return with a brand-new set of guidelines for users seeking the blue badge.

The announcement confirms reports that came out earlier this year in June. Jane Manchun Wong suggested Twitter was working on a new verification system. On Tuesday, the company confirmed the rumors with an official blog post. Which they also confirmed would roll out in “early 2021.” Something we haven’t seen before, Twitter asking for feedback on the new verification process.

If the proposal remains steadfast, accounts that would be eligible for verification would include government accounts, companies, brands, nonprofits, news media accounts, entertainment, sports, activists, organizers, and what Twitter refers to as “other influential individuals.” Each type of account must meet specific requirements, like being profiled in a media outlet, in order to receive verification. You can view the entirety of Twitter’s draft policy here. After receiving feedback, Twitter will release the final policy on December 17th.

The social media giant also provided information on what could have the badge taken away. Such as a verified user changing their display name or bio to mislead people on their true identity. Or repeat terms of service violations could yield to a loss of verification.

“But the blue verified badge isn’t the only way we are planning to distinguish accounts on Twitter. Heading into 2021, we’re committed to giving people more ways to identify themselves through their profiles, such as new account types and labels,” Twitter’s Tuesday blog post read. “We’ll share more in the coming weeks. This is just the beginning of what we have planned for 2021.”

If you’d like to submit your feedback on Twitter’s new verification program. Please do so by December 8th. Of course you can also tweet your feedback by using the hashtag #VerificationFeedback. Lastly, for more tech news, Apple Now Replacing Faulty AirPods Pro’s at No Charge.
