This 17,200-square-foot family getaway home sits cozily on Hawaii’s Big Island. The format, canopy-like pavilions laid out neatly around the site. Olson Kunding link the home via elevated wooden passages paired with lush green gardens. Hale Lana, which means “floating home,” seemingly hovers over the site’s lava fields and rich gardens. The home sits at the ecotone between the beautifully landscaped sections. Beside the expansive ocean views of the Haleakalā volcano on Maui nearby.

“Hale Lana’s roof picks up on the local Hawaiian vernacular, where large canopy roofs gather prevailing trade wind breezes and keep them moving through the building. However, this project takes that idea to a new level structurally with a very long cantilever and an extremely precise leading roof edge.” –Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal

The end goal for this beautiful home was to balance transparency. To create an enclosure that would be home for the couple. Yet have enough space to accommodate extended family and host large gatherings. All while maximizing connection to the Hawaiian climate and landscape. At the entry point of the house, you’re met with enormous trees, berms, and lava fields. You’re met with a gorgeous view of the house with Maui in the distance. They wrap the principal house in sliding window walls opening covered passages that lead to the home’s other four pavilions: the cabana, the master suite, the guest suite, and the garage.

The LR2 House by Montalba Architects is a Structural Masterpiece

Cantilevered double-pitch roofs create deep canopies that surround the buildings and their lanais. This allows each pavilion to open up completely to cool ocean breezes. The Hale Lana House features custom screens for each section of the house allowing for adjustments in any environmental condition. You can dial down to your desired level of sun, air, and privacy. The finishing touches come from the custom-designed furniture and interior pieces. They give the Hale Lana House subtle yet beautiful Hawaiian touches.
