Multi-hyphenate Scottish artist and producer Sam Gellaitry has returned with his new single, ‘START UP A RUMOUR’, out now via Major Recordings and Warner Records. The track is a masterful blend of blithe, synth-laden production with infectious elements of funk and disco, showcasing the artist’s signature sound while exploring the complex dynamics of a relationship.

The song delves into the necessary friction and imperfections that are part of any real connection. Gellaitry explained in a statement that he believes butting heads from time to time is a healthy and essential part of a relationship. He contrasted this direct approach with the alternative of seeking outside opinions. “I’ve always found that confiding in friends with relationship issues will always warrant a biased response,” he said. “I’ll always have preference for being upfront instead of potentially starting up a rumour.”

On the track, treated vocals glide over a swirling bassline and a pumping 4×4 kick drum. The production channels a playful sense of freedom, even as the lyrics explore the heavier emotional terrain of coming of age as both a person and an artist.

The release of ‘START UP A RUMOUR’ comes at a moment of significant career momentum for Gellaitry. His 2021 track ‘Assumptions’ experienced a massive viral surge earlier this summer, reaching over 500,000 daily streams and bringing a new wave of attention to his back catalog. Beyond his own music, Gellaitry has been in high demand, recently appearing as the face of Stone Island’s Spring Summer ‘25 Collection campaign and playing a sold-out DJ residency in Brooklyn where he teased new music. He has also continued an impressive run of collaborations, producing and writing for acclaimed artists like PinkPantheress, Kaytranada, GoldLink, and salute.
