Sou Fujimoto Crafts “Not a Hotel Ishigaki” in Japan’s Okinawa Region

The holiday home features a lovely meadow-topped roof.

Renowned Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto unveiled his latest project located in the southwest of Ishigaki Island in Okinawa, Japan. Fujimoto built this holiday home with Not a Hotel, which develops and sells vacation homes in a variety of locations. Dubbed “Not a Hotel Ishigaki,” the unique tropical resort sits on a circular base open in all directions, welcoming the surrounding natural splendor while blending into its surroundings with a beautiful undulated roof covered in vegetation.

Film Review: Everything Everywhere All at Once

The shape of Fujimoto’s latest piece allows access from the building terraces. Thus creating an inner landscape complete with meadows, relaxation areas, and a water mirror that reflects the sky and a singular tree nearby. Additionally, without defining a front or back side, the shape promotes a flow of circulation that aims to dissolve the boundary between inside and outside. The spacious main living room, along with an open-air living and dining room, overlooks the sea. An adjacent terrace opens towards a 12-meter infinity pool and fireplace. Further on, a sauna and open-air path with panoramic views offer guests a variety of activities during their stay.

Sou Fujimoto’s “Not a Hotel Ishigaki” will open in 2023. Potential buyers can either purchase the entire building or rent it out as a hotel to others. Additionally, owners can also use other Not a Hotel locations. The first location, “Not a Hotel Aoshima,” is set to open in November. You can read more about Not a Hotel here.
