The design centers itself around a cylinder that rises above the roof of the house, featuring lattice tiles near its top. Architects describe this area as the house’s “heart,” with a pool and yard completing this lively social area. Doubling as a contemporary observatory, this space encourages residents to discover the passage of time. The design allows the sun and upper lattices to paint intricate lines on the walls that change with the seasons. This central area also links different sections of the house, allowing residents to pass from room to room via the outdoor space. The name Wóolis in Mayan means ball, round, or circle, referring to the aforementioned central cylinder at the heart.

“[It is] a place that invites us to observe and remember our origins, a contemporary observatory that provokes us to discover the passage of time that can be seen in the lines that the sun and the upper lattice of the cylinder paint on the walls at different times of the day, traces that change their location during the year due to the varying inclination of the sun.”

The central pool is not the only outdoor space at the Wóolis House. Architects also added an additional two patios to the home. The first is a public patio at the front of the house. while the second is located in a private area at the rear. The aesthetic of the home remains relatively understated, intentionally so. The project does not pretend to be unique with its luxurious materials and coatings. Rather, Wóolis House finds luxury in the rigid sincerity of its elements.
