Triangle of Sadness

The 75th Cannes Film Festival concluded with Swedish director Ruben Östlund taking home the big prize. Östlund’s class-conscious satire Triangle of Sadness beat twenty other contenders to win the illustrious Palme d’Or.

The Top 20 Quentin Tarantino Characters of All-Time

In Triangle of Sadness, a cruise for the super-rich sinks, leaving the survivors trapped on an island. The biting satire sees models and moguls have their status undermined, culminating with a rampant vomiting scene. The film stars Woody Harrelson as a Marxist yacht captain alongside Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean. However, the class warfare comedy was met with mixed reviews from critics.

With the victory, Östlund joins the ultra-exclusive club as a two-time Palme d’Or winner. He previously won the award in 2017 for The Square, thus pulling off the rare feat of winning the grand prize for back-to-back films. Östlund joins Francis Ford Coppola, Shôhei Imamura, and Michael Haneke, among others, as two-time Palme d’Or winners.

Additionally, the festival’s second prize, the Grand Prix, went to Belgian director Lukas Dhont’s Close and French legend Claire Denis’ Stars at Noon. The former is a tender boyhood drama about two thirteen-year-olds whose intimate bond is tragically separated after being mocked by schoolmates. Meanwhile, the latter is a Denis Johnson adaptation about an English businessman and American journalist who strike up a romance in Nicaragua at the onset of the pandemic.

As we await an official trailer for Triangle of Sadness, you can watch an official clip from the film below. Further, independent film label Neon will distribute the film in the U.S.

Lastly, Margot Robbie to Star in and Produce ‘Ocean’s Eleven’.
