Tom Brady Announces Return for 23rd NFL Season

"I've realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands."

Well, that didn’t last long. Exactly 40 days after retiring from the NFL, Tom Brady announced he would return for his 23rd NFL season. At age 44, the seven-time Super Bowl Champion said he’s got some “unfinished business” to attend to. Brady announced his return via Twitter.

“These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa.”

Earlier in the day, Brady shared a video showing Cristiano Ronaldo asking him “You’re finished right?” Though his answer wasn’t entirely clear, Brady’s facial expression hinted that the door to return wasn’t entirely closed. The unretirement news also comes one day after an unfortunate collector paid $518,000 for Brady’s “last NFL TD ball” at auction.

Brady rejoins a Buccaneers team needing to retain several important free agents before next season. Key players from the Buccaneers 2021 championship run including Jason Pierre-Paul, Carlton Davis, and Jordan Whitehead are essential for Tampa to compete for a title next season. Four-time Super Bowl Champion and friend of Brady, Rob Gronkowski has yet to announce his playing status for next season.
