Sprinter Christian Coleman has defended his girlfriend, reigning 100-meter world champion Sha’Carri Richardson, after she was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting him at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Richardson was arrested on Sunday for a fourth-degree domestic violence offense and was in custody for 19 hours.

Coleman, who declined to press charges, spoke out about the incident. “For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all round,” he said, per USA Today. “I don’t feel like she should have been arrested. I mean people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that.”

He acknowledged that both of them have things to work on personally but emphasized his desire to show support. “I’m the type of guy who’s in the business of extending grace, and mercy and love,” Coleman stated. He also praised Richardson, calling her a “great person” and “the best female athlete in the world.”

The altercation reportedly took place after Richardson finished fourth in the women’s 200-meter race on Sunday. As the defending champion, she has an automatic bye to compete in the 100 meters at the upcoming world championships in Tokyo.
