The Hem House by Portal 92 Creates the Illusion of Oneness

Featuring wooden louver details and stone outdoor furnishings.

Located in the bustling town of Muzaffarnagar, India, The Hem House by Portal 92 is a sprawling residential refurbishment project. Formerly, the establishment presented itself as two asymmetrical structures. Portal 92 hems the two houses together by finding a vague sense of symmetry in an asymmetric system to create the illusion of oneness.

The Sleeve House Sees Two Prisms Join in the Hudson Valley

When approaching the Hem House, the eyes move to a large portico that grounds the structure and emphasizes the central common space. This imposes a sense of singularity on the reconfigured façade that cleverly masks the two discrete entrances to each house. Additionally, horizontal stone volumes envelop the first floor, featuring slits for plants to droop through. This beautiful mix of stone and greens also functions as an extended balcony opening up to the vast landscape afront.

Throughout the property, wooden louver details are carefully designed to embody lightlessness and warmth, creating this sense of organized asymmetry. Outside, chiseled furnishings appear in several recreational sit-out areas in the landscaping. Made from natural Thermo-Ash wood and soft limestone, these spaces provide a functional yet calming retreat. This updated structure takes on revived meaning as it soulfully reshapes the way the structures and surfaces of the residence cohabitate.
