Vince Staples is getting his own scripted comedy series on Netflix. According to a report from Deadline, the streaming giant has given a series order to The Vince Staples Show, starring and executive produced by the critically acclaimed artist. Set in his hometown of Long Beach, California, the fictional series will be loosely based on Staples’ life.

Kenya Barris, the creator of ABC’s black-ish, will also executive produce through his company Khalabo Ink Society. Additionally, Entergalactic creator Ian Edelman and executive producer Maurice Williams will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Further, well-known music video director Calmatic will direct the first two episodes.
“It’s our mission to work with the best artists in the world,” Netflix head of comedy Tracey Pakosta said. “Vince has already established himself as one of the most talented young musicians today and we’re really excited about how his sensibility – and sense of humor – will translate into a unique comedy series.”
Meanwhile, the 29-year-old rapper has continued to grow his acting resume within the past few years. Staples recently wrapped filming for White Men Can’t Jump, 20th Century Studios’ reboot of the 1992 sports comedy. Additionally, Staples landed a role in the Showtime comedy pilot The Wood, based on the 1999 film.
In late 2019, Vince Staples released a trio of videos promoting new singles on Youtube as “episodes” of The Vince Staples Show. It’s likely the new Netflix comedy series will take on a similar style and tone to those initial videos, the first of which you can watch below.
