The Weeknd Unveils Wild Teaser for HBO Series ‘The Idol’

From 'Euphoria' creator Sam Levinson, starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp.

HBO has officially unveiled the first teaser for The Idol. The new drama series co-created by Sam Levinson of Euphoria and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd. Set against the backdrop of the music industry, The Idol stars Tesfaye as a mysterious Los Angeles club owner and modern-day cult leader as he embarks on a “complicated relationship with a rising pop idol, played by Lily-Rose Depp.

The teaser begins by recognizing the “sick and twisted minds” of the series’ creators. What ensues over the next seventy-or-so seconds is exactly that. A hyperactive montage shows colorful parties in Hollywood mansions, cult rituals, drug-fueled debauchery, and orgies in “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood”. The trailer concludes with a tense interaction between Depp’s character and an unseen figure – presumable Tesfaye’s character – asking “Do you trust me?

“Not really,” she says with a smile.

The teaser arrives following a creative overhaul in late April, with director Amy Seimetz and actress Suzanna Son exiting. Tesfaye was said to have been unhappy with the initial creative direction for the show.

The Idol has yet to receive a premiere date from HBO. While we wait, you can watch the official teaser in the player above. As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
