Last week, Kylian Mbappé‘s return to Paris Saint-Germain seemed impossible. The team had reportedly “given up” on trying to re-sign the superstar forward as he leaned towards a new deal with Real Madrid. Over the weekend, Mbappé shockingly “snubbed” Madrid in favor of a return to France on a three-year contract. Now, LaLiga plans to take legal action against Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite pushback, LaLiga stood firm on its decision to file a complaint against PSG. The Spanish league released the following statement regarding the situation.
“LaLiga will file a complaint against PSG before UEFA, the French administrative and fiscal authorities and European Union authorities, to continue to defend the economic ecosystem of European football and its sustainability. This type of agreement attacks the economic stability of European football, putting at risk hundreds of thousands of jobs and the integrity of the sport.
It is scandalous that a club like PSG…can close such an agreement while those clubs that could afford the hiring of the player without seeing their wage bill compromised are left without being able to sign him. PSG is assuming an impossible investment, seeing that it has an unacceptable wage bill and large financial losses in prior seasons. It is violating current UEFA and French economic control rules.”
Further, LaLiga president Javier Tebas called PSG’s renewal of Mbappé’s contract “an insult to football”. He questions how the club could afford Mbappé’s renewal after posting losses of €700 million EUR.
However, football fans around the world immediately slammed LaLiga’s decision. Several commentators claim the Spanish league is just desperate to have another star in their league. As of now, there is no clear indication whether the legal action will carry any weight with UEFA.
