On Friday, renowned R&B singer-songwriter SZA shared new visuals for her hit song “I Hate U”.
LaKeith Stanfield stars at the titular “U” dealing with the fallout of a relationship on a scenic beach. In a fiery fit, the acclaimed actor thrashes sand and yells into a phone that he then throws into the ocean. His invested performance for the brief video should be of little surprise to those familiar with his work.
“I Hate U” is one of the SZA’s most unexpected hits in her career. The track went from SoundCloud loosie to viral TikTok sensation and is now one of her more critically and commercially successful songs. Shortly after release, “I Hate U” became the most streamed R&B song by a female artist on Apple Music in its first week. The song was initially one of three demos uploaded back in August, alongside “Joni” and “Nightbird”.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up to SZA’s 2017 masterpiece, Ctrl. Since then, she’s released several singles and appeared on soundtracks for Black Panther, Dear Evan Hansen, and Trolls World Tour.
