Production on Disney and Marvel’s long awaited sequel ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ has briefly paused. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, production will halt from Thanksgiving until early 2022 as star Letitia Wright recovers from an injury. Wright plays Shuri, the sister of Black Panther T’Challa.
Initially, Wright was hospitalized with minor injuries in late August after shooting a scene involving a stunt rig. The exact details or extent of the injuries is unknown. At the time, Marvel Studios said the injury would not impact the shooting schedule. Wright has been rehabbing her injury in London while the production films around her character. Director Ryan Coogler and his crew have shot select footage without Wright. A representative for Wright delivered the following statement to THR.
“Letitia has been recovering in London since September from injuries sustained on the set of Black Panther 2 and is looking forward to returning to work in early 2022. Letitia kindly asks that you keep her in your prayers.”
Shuri became a breakout fan-favorite in the 2018 blockbuster film. Black Panther grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and won three Oscars. Wright’s character was promoted to the lead of the sequel following Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing in August 2020. Supporting actors Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, and Angela Bassett have all reprised their roles.
Marvel Studios previously delayed the premiere of ‘Wakanda Forever’ in October. The film was moved from July 8th, 2022 to November 11th, 2022. At this time, the updated premiere date remains intact despite the shutdown.
