Apple has officially announced Self Service Repair, allowing customers to complete their own repairs for the first time. For those tech-savvy enough to take on the challenge, Apple will grant access to the necessary parts and tools. At first, the service will only be available for iPhone 12 and 13 lineups, followed by Mac computers with M1 chips.
Initially, the program will focus only on the most commonly serviced modules. This includes repairs to the iPhone display, camera, and battery. Apple plans to have additional repair services available late next year. Apple will require customers to review a Repair Manual before ordering parts via the Self Service Repair Online Store. Once the repair is completed, customers will be able to recycle used parts with Apple for credit towards their purchase.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise considering how adamant the tech giant has been against customer repairs. They previously argued that customers could injure themselves or harm their devices when completing repairs. It seems like Apple is finally acknowledging that you needn’t be a “genius” to fix one of their products. Apple currently boasts over 5,000 Authorized Service Providers and 2,800 Independent Service Providers with access to these exclusive parts, tools, and manuals.
Further, several industry professionals suspect Apple will use serialization to lock down various iPhone components. This would restrict the use of third-party parts or parts reclaimed from other iPhones in the repair process.
Self Service Repair will launch in the U.S. early next year and expand to additional regions throughout 2022.
