What can we say, records are meant to be broken. Today it’s official Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film has now officially surpassed Spirited Away as the number one film ever in Japan.

Now I’d just like to clear the air. Hayao Miyazaki’s films are classic, a reminder of many of our childhoods and are incomparable. These numbers are based on sales alone. At the end of last week, Koyoharu Gotōge’s hit theatrical feature Demon Slayer  sold roughly 24,049,907 tickets, earning ¥32,478,895,850 JPY (approximately $314 million USD) domestically. It’s only taken the film 73 days to surpass Hayao Miyazaki‘s beloved Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away for the highest grossing film in Japanese history. During its original 2002 run, Spirited Away garnered ¥30.8 billion JPY (approximately $297,024,928 USD). It hit roughly 31.68 billion (approximately $305,517,168 USD) with its recent screenings within the last year.

We’d first like to say, congratulations to the team who worked on Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba for this is a major accomplishment. While nothing can replace the work of Hayao Miyazaki. There’s nothing wrong with introducing and accepting new classics. The good old days are happening right now.
