Remember eBay? Well, they’ve just officially announced the launch of its authentication platform. It offers a choice competitor to Stock X, the current market leader. We find this to be a good thing because when companies compete, the customer wins.
Historically, eBay h in the world of sneakers. First in the USA and then in Europe, the buy-sell platform allowed collectors to get the rarest and most difficult pairs cop. With time and changes in purchasing methods, the platform has somewhat fallen into obscurity, but has remained a top player in the United States, because of its solid reputation for excellent quality.
Over the years, the game has changed completely. Players such as Stock X, GOAT, Flight Club and Stadium Goods own a majority of the market share in the sneaker resell market. With all of them offering one thing specifically. Sneaker authentication. That’s the magic formula, the authentication platform that reassure buyers their sneakers are real, in a market plagued by fakes.
It is with this in mind that eBay announced this week to launch its own authentication platform. The service will launch the week of October 25 and will, for the moment, they’ll only authenticate sneakers above $100 sold in the United States. The success of this launch will determine if the eBay authentication platform take their talents abroad. We think Stock X might have to tighten as they now have a major and strong new competitor in a space they once dominated. We’ll see how things play out..
