Alessandro Michele debuted the latest campaign from Gucci, which draws inspiration from the legendary filmography of Stanley Kubrick. The Italian luxury house’s new campaign highlights iconic scenes from Kubrick’s films, recreated with meticulous detail.

Gucci’s Exquisite campaign is photographed by duo Mert and Marcus in an ode to the “eclectic and dissonant powers” shared by cinema and clothing. The scenes featured pull from Kubrick classics including The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, and Barry Lyndon. Michele inserts Gucci-clad models into near-exact replicas of the famed director’s work to showcase Gucci’s new Exquisite collection. Additionally, the Gucci creative director spoke about finding inspiration in Kubrick’s films in a lengthy note.
“Kubrick was, in essence, a real sculptor of genres: the ‘cross-genre’ director, ahead of his time. His ability to build stories that exceed significance, crossing borders and setting labels on fire, has always been deeply inspiring to me.
As an act of love, I decided to re-inhabit Kubrick’s films. I took the liberty of disassembling, blending, grafting and reassembling them. Sticking to my creative praxis, I seized those movies, re-semanticizing them, populating them with my clothes. The past explodes into the present.”
To ensure authenticity, Gucci partnered with Warner Brothers as well as Kubrick’s longtime costume designer Milena Canonera to bring these images to life. Further, by crafting such accurate sets and finding lookalikes to portray the actors, the campaign brings a certain surreality to the collection.
