‘70s Heads Rejoice! Netflix has given the green light to That ‘90s Show, a follow-up to Fox’s megahit That ‘70s Show. Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith, who played Kitty and Red Forman in the original series, will reprise their roles in the sequel. Netflix ordered 10 episodes of the show, which will follow the same multi-cam sitcom setup as the original.
The plotline for That ‘90s Show follows Leia Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, as she visits her grandparents in the summer of 1995. She bonds with a new generation of kids in Point Place, WI “under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red.” It is unknown if any other original cast members will return for the spinoff.

That ‘70s Show premiered on Fox in 1998, amassing a cult following over its eight seasons and 200 episodes. Original creators Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner are onboard the spinoff as writers and executive producers. Rupp and Smith will also serve as executive producers in addition to their starring roles. Rumors of a new incarnation of the classic series have been brewing for a minute. That ‘70s Show attracted tremendous viewership on Netflix before leaving the platform in September 2020.
This isn’t the first attempt at a That ‘70s Show spinoff. In 2002, Fox premiered That ‘80s Show in response to the overwhelming popularity of That ‘70s Show and NBC’s Freaks and Geeks. Set in San Diego, it featured none of the original cast members and struggled to gain a strong following. It was canceled just five months after the premiere. Though the show shares much of the same structure, writers, and production staff, That ‘80s Show is not billed as a direct spinoff.
