The BioHome3D is the World’s First 100% Bio-Based Home

3D-printed, fully recyclable, and made of natural materials.

Scientists at the University of Maine constructed the first 3D-printed home from 100% natural and environmentally-friendly materials. Known as the BioHome3D, the cozy 600-square-foot prototype came together using one of the world’s largest 3D printers in a massive project between the University of Maine and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The university printed the floors, walls, and ceilings as individual pieces using bio-resins and wood fibers sustainably sourced from sawmills. Though this is a prototype, the pieces come ready for assembly along with doors, windows, and electrical wiring. Additionally, pre-built-in insulation is also made of recycled wood fibers. The actual assembly of BioHome3D was significantly quicker than most traditional homes. According to the university, the home took roughly half a day to come together from initial printing to on-site assembly with electricity installation.

“Less time required on-site building and fitting up the home due to the use of automated manufacturing and off-site production. Printing using abundant, renewable, locally sourced wood fiber feedstock reduces dependence on a constrained supply chain. These materials support the revitalization of local forest product industries and are more resilient to global supply chain disruptions and labor shortages.”

The University of Maine hopes the BioHome3D will alleviate the country’s affordable housing shortage. Additionally, future iterations will be more customizable in order to meet “a homeowner’s space, energy efficiency, and aesthetic preferences.”

BioHome3D is currently located at the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center. Researchers equipped BioHome3D with sensors that monitor its structural integrity as well as its thermal and environmental capabilities. Data from these sensors will influence future designs.
