DeLorean Exhibits its New Alpha5 Plasmatail and Omega Concepts

Expected in 2024 and 2040, respectively.

Best known for crafting the iconic car from Back to the Future, the new DeLorean Motor Company is continuing to build out its signature aesthetic. Following the reveal of its Alpha 5 electric sports car, the revamped company offers a first look at its 2024 “Alpha5 Plasmatail” and 2040 “Omega” concept vehicles at the recent Monterey Car Week.

Foremost, DeLorean’s Alpha5 Plasmatail is the most road-ready of the two concepts. The vehicle maintains the Alpha5’s original two-gullwing-door design while appearing in wagon form with a stylized rear hatch. The Plasmatail features sharp aerodynamic lines and thin LED headlights as seen on the standard Alpha5. Additional specs for the Plasmatail include a 100+ kWh battery pack offering more than 300 miles of range. Further, the vehicle accelerates from zero to 60mph in 2.99 seconds.

Meanwhile, the 2040 DeLorean Omega delivers a vision of the distant future as a Baja-inspired off-road racer. DeLorean hails the 2040 Omega as a “complete departure from traditional automotive design,” which is immediately apparent. The vehicle looks to be something straight out of a cyberpunk film with its dumbbell-shaped roofline, moon rover-style wheels, cannon-shaped headlights, and fin-shaped translucent rear lights. Its rounded design evokes a smoother aesthetic than what we’ve seen from the sharp edges of Tesla’s Cybertruck. Interestingly enough, the 2040 Omega, like the Cybertruck, doesn’t feature side mirrors upon initial viewing. However, as Elon Musk pointed out last year, the law requires side mirrors, therefore the final product must include them.
