On April 15th, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play Major League Baseball. Despite a flurry of abusive rhetoric from fans, opponents, and even his own teammates, Robinson immediately showed his unmatched talent on the field. He was a Rookie of the Year and league MVP, leading the Dodgers to six league championships and a World Series win in 1955. In 1997, Jackie’s #42 was retired by all of Major League Baseball to commemorate his life and legacy, never to be worn by another player again. For the 75th Anniversary of Robinson’s historic feat, Nike honors the Hall of Famer with an exclusive Dunk Low.
Cooler Master Reveals a Sneaker-Shaped PC
The Dunk Low “Jackie Robinson” opts for a two-tone Dodger Blue and cream white colorway packed with plenty of detail. Nike uses baseball motifs throughout this design. Most prominently, a smooth white leather base resembles the cowhide used to make baseballs. Further, white shoelaces use a blue virgule stitching pattern similar to the seams of a baseball. A Dodger Blue felt Swoosh serves as a nod to the classic felt jerseys worn by the Brooklyn Dodgers. The toebox displays additional embroidered Swooshes.
The sneakers also feature several special commemorative elements, such as a quote from Robinson on the overlays and insoles. “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me. All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.” Additional details include Robinson’s #42 printed on the lateral heel and a “75 Years Breaking Barriers” baseball diamond logo on the tongue tab. Below, a white midsole and black rubber outsole complete the sneaker.
Though Nike has yet to announce an official release date, look for the Dunk Low “Jackie Robinson” to arrive this April via Nike’s website and select retailers. In the meantime, check out the official images in the gallery above. Be sure to let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below!
