HBO released the first trailer for its highly anticipated new series, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.  Winning Time details how the Lakers became the most successful professional basketball team in the 1980s.  The series is based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.

The trailer begins with Lakers own Jerry Buss proclaiming “there are two things in this world that make me believe in God: sex and basketball.  I’m about to buy a team.”  It then jumps to the 1979 NBA Draft and sees the Lakers select Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson with the first pick.  Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were the foundation of the ‘Showtime’ Lakers, named for their exciting transition offense and outgoing personalities.  Winning Time stars John C. Reilly as Buss, Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson, and Adrien Brody as Pat Riley.  The cast also features Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jason Clarke as Jerry West, and Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss.  The ten episode series is set to premiere on HBO Max in March 2022.
