As the threat of climate change persists, a team of Australians is building a massive black box to transcribe our potential downfall. Located on the west coast of Tasmania, this monolithic steel vault will document Earth’s warming weather patterns.
In aviation, a black box, or flight recorder, is a device placed in an aircraft in case of an accident. The black box records relevant flight data, as well as conversations in the cockpit, to aid in accident investigation. Should the planet succumb to the effects of climate change, Earth’s Black Box will be crucial in piecing together humanity’s missteps.
“The purpose of the device is to provide an unbiased account of the events that lead to the demise of the planet, hold accountability for future generations, and inspire urgent action.”
Among those involved with the creation of the black box include data researchers from the University of Tasmania, artists, and architects. The creators say the box will scour the internet searching for keywords relating to climate change. It will record world leaders’ actions and inactions and collect daily metrics. This includes average land and oceanic temperatures, biodiversity loss, and atmospheric CO2 concentration. The algorithm will include “Earth 500,” a data set of metrics relating to the planet and humanity’s health. For obvious reasons, the creators hope the box will never have to be opened. However, if civilization crashes, the black box is designed to survive with “a completely objective data story.”

Tasmania was chosen as the location for its “geopolitical and environmental safety.” The vault is expected to be completed early next year. However, creators say they have already begun gathering information. An automated, solar-powered hard drive will save the data with enough storage to last 50 years. If humanity does perish to climate change, hopefully Earth’s Black Box will help the next inhabitants learn from our mistakes.
