Nike’s Classic Edition Uniforms Celebrate 75 Years of NBA History

The Knicks, Celtics, and Warriors receive a refreshing blast from the past for the upcoming anniversary season.

For the NBA’s forthcoming 75th anniversary season, Nike has unveiled Classic Edition uniforms for the league’s three original franchises.  The New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Golden State Warriors will each don exclusive classic jerseys that showcase some of Nike’s best designs yet.

The Knicks, Celtics, and Warriors franchises paved the way for the future of basketball. On August 3rd, 1946, the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America merged to form the NBA.  The Nike NBA Classic Edition uniforms celebrate the history of the league and the fans that helped build it.

All three uniforms prominently emblazon the Nike Futura logo for the first time on an NBA jersey.  For the Knicks and Celtics, the graphic work displayed is precisely akin to the 1946 uniforms.  The Knicks jersey features authentic New York typeface and larger-scale numbers.  The Celtics uniform is set with a shimmering green finish on the graphics to give it a modernized touch.

For the Warriors, their uniform is a mash-up of sorts.  Originally from Philadelphia, their uniform pays homage to both cities – Philly and San Francisco.

“The original Philly jerseys were blue, yellow, and white with striping on the waist and a drop shadow on the numbers,” says Nike Design Director Elesban Montoya, “and we brought in the scarlet red, which is synonymous with San Francisco.”

While retro uniforms are nothing new in the NBA, the Classic Edition has a refreshing aesthetic.  These are different than traditional throwbacks, something about these uniforms just feels right.  Nike injected the perfect amount of modern flair while maintaining the old-school vibe.  Nike’s cutting edge designs delicately intersect with the spirit and legacy that 75 years of history brings.  With the NBA Classic Edition, Nike continues to show why they are miles ahead of the competition.
