Five of the most epic hitmakers will grace the stage at the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. On Thursday afternoon, the NFL announced Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige as performers for the 2022 festivities.
With a combined 43 Grammys and 19 Billboard Number 1 albums, this lineup is easily one of the best in the long history of the Halftime Show. What started in the 1960’s as an opportunity for prominent collegiate marching bands to showcase their talents has become a cultural phenomenon in recent decades. Michael Jackson’s iconic 1993 performance at the Rose Bowl shifted the landscape of the Halftime Show into the pop culture spectacle we know today.

For Dre, Kendrick, and Snoop, the show serves as a bit of a homecoming. 2022 marks the first year that the Super Bowl will be in their native Los Angeles in nearly 30 years. Who better to welcome the football world back to the west coast than three hip-hop icons? Dr. Dre delivered a statement on the matter.
“The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and to do it in my own backyard, will be one of the biggest thrills of my career. I’m grateful to Jay-Z, Roc Nation, the NFL, and Pepsi, as well as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar for joining me in what will be an unforgettable cultural moment.”
Having five artists from the worlds of hip-hop and R&B is a bit surprising for the NFL. Throughout the 2010’s, the NFL regularly selected pop artists to lure a viewer demographic that wouldn’t have tuned in to the event otherwise. Artists like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Coldplay, and Maroon 5 were utilized to draw non-sports fans. Last year, The Weeknd brought the house down coming off his multi-platinum number one album, After Hours.
Super Bowl LVI will be held on February 13th, 2022 from the newly-constructed SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Let us know your thoughts on the lineup in the comments section below! Lastly, for more of the latest news from wavypack, Fugees Announce 25th Anniversary Reunion Tour.
