Blake Griffin might have just claimed the award for best sneakers of the 2020-21 NBA Season. Last night, the Nets forward rocked custom Jordan 35’s paying homage to none other than McLovin’ from Superbad.
The kicks are a vibrant blue on pearl white, featuring a custom “McGriffin” Hawaiian ID displayed prominently on the tongue. Upon closer examination of the sneakers, the address on the ID belongs to the home arena of Griffin’s former team, the Detroit Pistons. Safe to say Griffin, who signed with the Nets in early March, has been sitting on these kicks for a minute. Admittedly, an un-updated address is not enough to take away from how sick these kicks are.

Superbad is a certified classic. The 2007 coming-of-age flick vaulted the careers of Jonah Hill and Michael Cera. The two played inseparable best friends navigating the last few weeks of high school with the goal of throwing an epic party and, ultimately, getting laid before going off to college. When their hyper-nerdy friend Fogell gets a fake ID to buy alcohol, it’s absolutely ridiculous.

Griffin has had a bit of a career resurgence since joining the Nets. Many questioned his effort and injury-prone tendencies during his time with the Pistons, eventually leading to a buyout. Though he’ll likely never be the All-NBA posterizing superstar he once was, he’s shown to be a very effective role player for a competitive team.
The Nets took down the Spurs 128-116 in what was also James Harden’s return from injury. Griffin posted 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists, similar to his overall stats since joining the Nets. Those numbers aren’t going to blow anyone away, but that’s okay because the sneakers will. Kicks or no kicks though, Griffin looks like he’ll be a valuable contributor during the Nets’ playoff run.
