Zion Williamson has been on a tear during his sophomore campaign with the New Orleans Pelicans. He’s racking up 25.7 points and 7 rebounds every time he steps on the court. More impressively, he’s shooting 62.2% from the field and 70.8% from the line. Both numbers have increased from last season. Sure, 71% from the line isn’t what you hope to see from one of your star players. Though he’s only 20 years old and steadily improving. His progress garners excitement. The biggest upside to the 2019-2020 number-one pick is his consistency.

The Best Big Pun Songs of All-Time

In their win last night against the short-handed Lakers, Zion posted his 21st consecutive 20-point game before turning 21. He passed LeBron James and Luka Doncic, putting him in elite company. I’m not typically one to get excited over a very specific stat like this. Especially one that only highlights the modern era (aka the one-and-done era), yet this one intrigues me. Zion doesn’t turn 21 until July 6. And the Pels have 29 games remaining on their schedule. If he can keep up this level of play, there’s a possibility he could have 50 consecutive 20-point games before hitting the ripe, old age of 21. A record that I would expect to stand for quite some time.

While 50 consecutive games with 20 points sound impressive, it leaves him well short of any record when age is removed. Williamson would need to stay on pace through the entire length of next season to catch the current record holder. Wilt Chamberlain is currently sitting comfortably at the top of the record books with 129 consecutive 20-point games. The future is bright for Zion, and he will no doubt do incredible things. Let’s remember, however, there’s always work to be done when you’re chasing greatness. Lastly, for more hoops news, check out our NBA Injury Report.
