Nike SB Dunk Low “Street Hawker”

LL GG Photographer

Designed by Guangzhou artist Jason Deng, the Nike SB Dunk Low “Street Hawker” celebrates the bonding effect food culture has in China. The left and right shoes of the Nike SB Dunk Low come in unique designs, representing half a dozen different dishes. Beginning with the left shoe, they use a lighter beige for three flour-based dishes. A green suede toe box likely mimicking Douzhi, a green bean soup, while the lateral sides appear to be pita bread. The water-color patterns across the lateral sides represent mutton soup. Some other graphic details included are a wood-grain Swoosh, some more water-color fading on the lateral heel for Shanghai noodles, and an embroidered 10-cent copper coin on the lateral heel.

The right shoe showcases just as much detail, this time with levels of spice in mind. A metallic toe box hinting at Chengdu hotpots with boiling chili oil in water-color around. Leather on the lateral inspired by the crispy roasted goose skin famous in Guangzhou. A metallic Swoosh nods to metal hooks used to hang roasted goose with the eyelets representing the Flames and lychee wood used to cook. Completing the right pair are the meat-colored linings and yellow outsole representing the cooking oils. In black and white thread, “food” is written on the shoes’ heels in Chinese calligraphy. The laces come in four colors inspired by essential seasonings in Chinese cuisine: Green (shallots), Yellow (ginger), White (garlic), and Black (black pepper).
